It is well-researched and a very fast read given its bulk, and I fell in love with Sira, rooting for her desperately by the end and thoroughly enjoying each twist and turn. This was a huge bestseller across Europe that somehow I hadn’t heard of before researching books to read in Spain I’m glad I found it, as it’s a really lovely book that touches on the Spanish Protectorate, the politics of the Civil War and its aftermath in Spain, and the cities of Madrid, Lisbon, Tetouan, and Tangiers of the time. It’s a long yet breezy novel, a superb book about a strong woman who becomes her own person and creates a life she loves amidst the destruction of the Spanish Civil War and then the beginnings of World War II. María Dueñas reminds us how it feels to be swept away by a masterful storyteller. The Time in Between follows the continent-hopping adventures of Sira Quiroga, a naive Madrileño seamstress turned skillful spy who, through a series of misfortunes, finds herself stuck in. Soon, she becomes entangled in politics, spying on the women she sews for. Already a runaway bestseller across Europe, The Time In Between is one of those rare, richly textured novels that enthrall down to the last page.
