It is well-researched and a very fast read given its bulk, and I fell in love with Sira, rooting for her desperately by the end and thoroughly enjoying each twist and turn. This was a huge bestseller across Europe that somehow I hadn’t heard of before researching books to read in Spain I’m glad I found it, as it’s a really lovely book that touches on the Spanish Protectorate, the politics of the Civil War and its aftermath in Spain, and the cities of Madrid, Lisbon, Tetouan, and Tangiers of the time. It’s a long yet breezy novel, a superb book about a strong woman who becomes her own person and creates a life she loves amidst the destruction of the Spanish Civil War and then the beginnings of World War II.
