I don’t think I will be reading any more Julia Bartz books. Towards the end it just became a crzy mess of “what the hell is going on here?” Then there was a feeling of Alex going through a bit of Stockholm Syndrome, and I didn’t like that. At first, I enjoyed the book and was curious to see where it was going. Julia Bartz is good at building suspense but lacks fully developing her characters and sticking to one storyline. This was definitely a book by a first-time author. Taylor is another writer attending the retreat. Several things were touched on but never fully developed: the ghost story, Wren and Alex’s friendship and possible lesbian relationship, Roza’s backstory, and Taylor’s backstory. A ghost story is touched on, but I didn’t think it was developed as much as it could have. This sounds enticing, but as the story progresses, it gets darker and more twisted. Roza will choose the best one, and the writer will receive a publishing deal and instant success. They will spend their time at the retreat writing a complete novel. Roza Vallo reveals to the five attendees that there will be a winner at the end of their month-long stay. Alex is not looking forward to seeing Wren again, but there are worse things waiting for her at the retreat than a former best friend. At the retreat, more details about their friendship will be revealed.
